Learn MoreAnganwadi, meaning “courtyard shelter” in Hindi, is a type of rural child care center in India, started by the Indian government in 1975 as part of the Integrated Child Development Services program under the Ministry of Woman and Child Development, to combat child hunger and malnutrition.
A typical Anganwadi center provides basic health care in villages and is a part of the Indian public health care system. Basic health care activities include contraceptive counseling and supply, nutrition education and supplementation, as well as pre-school activities. The centers may be used as depots for oral rehydration salts, basic medicines and contraceptives. As many as 13.3 lakh Anganwadi and mini-Anganwadi centers (AWCs/mini-AWCs) are operational throughout rural India.
Anganwadi staff are required to collect survey data regarding rural healthcare scenarios which often leads them to remote areas with very little internet connectivity. The field staff are provided with android-based mobile devices for this purpose, but the lack of connectivity makes it difficult for the them to gather and upload data in any form of central registry. The client required a solution where availability of internet connectivity would not hinder the data collection procedure.
Taashee implemented the ELK-based CommCareHQ as a solution to mitigate the specific challenges encountered by the client.CommCare deals with many different types of data but the primary data that is generated by users are form and case data. This data most often comes from a mobile device running the CommCare mobile application. In our case, this application was able to collect healthcare survey data offline through an android application, and this offline data was later synced with CommCare HQ application.
A form is created on the mobile device, which is received by CommCare and once the request has been authenticated and authorized it is fully processed before responding with a success or error response. The data collected is persisted to various backend data sources. An SQL database is used for authentication and authorization. If the submission is from a mobile device the sync record for the device is updated to allow efficient synchronization when the mobile device next makes a sync request i.e., when it can connect to the internet again.
Apart from the synchronous workflow described above, there is a data processing pipeline which runs asynchronously, as shown below. This pipeline is responsible for populating the secondary databases like Elastic search which are used for data analysis.
Elasticsearch is a flexible and powerful open-source, distributed real-time search and analytics engine for the cloud. Elastic search is responsible for the following core functionalities:

Since this was an Opensource solution, it proved to be a very affordable option as compared to other enterprise solutions which often become difficult to adopt in the public domain due to the steep paywalls associated. But the major benefit of this project was the offline working capability that this application presented.
The paper-less procedure led to a 30% increase in the number of respondents accessed over a period of 6 months, while the automatic centralized storage and search capability was responsible for almost 23% reduction in data loss.
